How to Install CAN CLIP V231 and Later (VCI1 and VCI3)

CAN CLIP installation guide covering versions V220 to V240, for both VCI1 and VCI3 probes.

Before you start

  • Temporarily disable your antivirus during installation (and re-enable it afterward). Ideally, add the install folders as exceptions to avoid false positives.
  • Work from an administrator Windows session.
  • Close auto-starting software (antivirus, security services, "tuning/USB" suites, etc.).
💡 Version recommendation: V231 / V234 are the most stable offline. Higher versions (≥ V237) may require online access/tokens and are often less compatible offline.

What you'll need

Software archive

CAN CLIP V231.zip (or V234.zip / V236.zip) containing Setup.exe

Drivers archive

DRIVERS ET ACTIVATION CAN CLIP.zip, which includes:

  • install.mp4 (installation video – optional)
  • Install Fix.reg (registry patch required before installation)
  • VCI 3 FOLDER: V9.0.1422.248.exe (VCI 3 drivers)
  • VCI 1 FOLDER: Bosch Driver.exe and RENAULT VCI Driver 1.8.9.0708.exe (VCI 1 / Renault VCI drivers)
  • Word documents for Wi-Fi mode (VCI 3)

Extract each archive into its own folder (right-click → Extract).

Step A — System preparation

A
  1. Extract CAN CLIP V231.zip (or your version) into a folder on your desktop.
  2. Extract DRIVERS ET ACTIVATION CAN CLIP.zip into a folder on your desktop.
  3. Double-click Install Fix.reg → Yes to the registry addition.

This patch prepares the installation environment.

Step B — Installing the software

B
  1. Open the CAN CLIP installation folder and run Setup.exe.
  2. Choose FIRST INSTALLATION.
  3. Accept the agreement → Next.
  4. Choose your language → Next → continue.
  5. Let the installer run (a few minutes).
  6. The PC restarts automatically.
At this point, CAN CLIP is installed.

Step C — Activation (official license)

⚠️ This step is critical. Follow the order carefully.

Go to:

C:\CLIP_X91\Lib\Application\

Launch RSRWin.exe.

Click on “I Understand…”, then on “Register me now”.

Then open the provided key generator:

setup-Register.exe

In the key generator, enter:

  • the serial number displayed previously,
  • the date: 31/12/29.

Then click on Generate.

Note: depending on the configuration, these fields may already be filled in. In that case, simply click directly on Generate.

The activation key will appear in the lower field.

Copy this activation key, return to the Clip Registration window, paste the key into the dedicated field, then confirm.

✅ Activation is now complete and functional.

Step D — Installing the drivers (probe)

If you have a VCI 1 (Renault VCI, hardware before 2025)

  1. Install Bosch Driver.exe.
  2. Install RENAULT VCI Driver 1.8.9.0708.exe.
  3. (Optional) Before opening CAN CLIP, run Renault VCI Driver to check/update the probe's firmware and license if needed.

If you have a VCI 3 (newer hardware, since 2025)

  1. Install V9.0.1422.248.exe (VCI 3 drivers) and follow the wizard. "VCI Manager (RNM)" is created on the desktop.
  2. Plug the VCI 3 into the PC (USB).
  3. Windows will show "Device not recognized" for a few seconds — this is normal.
  4. The probe beeps once when recognized, and both LEDs on the right side of the probe light up red (PC and Power).
  5. Launch VCI Manager (RNM) from your desktop.
  6. Check that the probe appears with an SN: xxxxx.
  7. Click Connect.
  8. Close VCI Manager (RNM) before launching CAN CLIP. This doesn't interrupt the connection, but this step is required for the software to work correctly.
  9. Launch CAN CLIP from the desktop shortcut.

Step E — First use and checks

  • USB cable properly plugged in, vehicle ignition on.
  • In CAN CLIP, check that the VCI is detected.
  • If you're using a VCI 3 over Wi-Fi, follow the included Word document for setup (SSID, password, AP/Client mode, etc.).

Best practices & common pitfalls

Driver conflicts: don't install both driver families (VCI1 and VCI3) indiscriminately on the same machine. Only install the ones matching your probe.
Antivirus: remember to re-enable it after installation and add C:\CLIP_X91\ as an exception.
USB & power: use a rear USB port (desktop PC) and avoid unpowered hubs.
Windows compatibility: run as Administrator. If you get an error, try compatibility mode (right-click → Properties → Compatibility).
Versions ≥ V237: often less functional offline and may require online tokens — prefer V231 / V234 for offline use.

Quick troubleshooting

CAN CLIP doesn't see the probe

  • VCI 1: reinstall Bosch Driver + Renault VCI Driver, connect directly via USB, restart the PC.
  • VCI 3: make sure V9.0.1422.248.exe is installed, reconnect the probe (wait for the beep), open VCI Manager (RNM) → Connect → close it → launch CAN CLIP.

Persistent "Device not recognized" message (VCI 3)

  • Try a different USB port, restart, and reinstall the VCI 3 package.

Installer stuck

  • Go back to a clean Windows setup (no other diagnostic suites active), disable third-party services, clear %temp%, and relaunch as Administrator.

Final checklist

  • Antivirus disabled during installation, then re-enabled
  • Install Fix.reg applied
  • CAN CLIP installed (FIRST INSTALLATION) + restart
  • License activated (see Step C)
  • Drivers matching your probe installed (VCI 1 or VCI 3)
  • VCI 3: VCI Manager (RNM) → Connect → closed before launching CAN CLIP
  • CAN CLIP launches OK, probe recognized, vehicle test successful
